Choose the Fitting Position
Measure the track or pole rather than the window glass when the fitting is already in place. For a new fitting, decide how far beyond the window the track or pole will extend at each side. Decide whether the curtains will sit above the window frame, inside a recess, or across the wall. An inside-recess fitting can look neat, but measure the recess at several points because walls and frames may not be perfectly square. Measure the Width
For an existing track, measure its full usable width, including any returns that the curtains need to cover. For a pole, measure between the finials or use the pole length specified by your curtain maker. If you are fitting a new track or pole, measure the span you plan to cover, including any extension beyond the frame. Do not use the glass width unless the curtains will fit inside the frame.
Curtain fabric usually needs more total width than the track or pole to create folds. The required fullness depends on the heading style and fabric, so give the fitting width to the curtain maker and confirm whether they want the finished curtain width or the track measurement. If ordering two panels, also confirm whether the stated width is for each panel or for the pair.
Measure the Drop
Measure from the point where the curtain will hang: the top of the track, the pole, or the position specified for its heading. Measure down to the intended finish, such as the windowsill, below the sill, or the floor. The correct starting point changes with the fitting and curtain heading, so check the maker’s measuring instructions before recording the drop.
For a floor-length curtain, measure to the floor at the left, center, and right of the window. Floors and ceilings can slope, so use the shortest or longest figure according to the maker’s guidance and the finish you want. Decide whether the hem should just clear the floor, touch it, or fall slightly beyond it. For a sill-length curtain, measure to the intended endpoint rather than assuming the sill depth.
Check Details Before Ordering
Write down each measurement with a label, such as “track width” or “drop from pole to floor,” and state whether it is in inches or centimeters. Measure twice, using a straight tape and keeping it level. Record separate widths and drops for each window, even if they appear identical; small differences can affect how curtains fit and hang.
Check what is included in the order dimensions. A curtain maker may ask for fitting measurements and calculate fabric fullness, or request finished panel dimensions. Confirm the heading style, number of panels, lining choice, opening direction, and whether returns or overlaps are needed. If the window has a deep recess, obstructions, or an unusual shape, share those details before ordering rather than adjusting measurements yourself.
A clear record of the fitting width, drop, and window details makes it easier to order curtains that suit the space.
